The Board is AUSactive's linkage to the exercise and active health industry. The Board is responsible for providing strategic leadership of the organisation within a framework of prudent and effective controls, and establishing the organisation's vision, mission, values, and standards of conduct in the interests of industry members, stakeholders and the communities in which AUSactive operates. 

It has an obligation to fulfill fiduciary responsibilities, guard against undue risk, determine governing policies and program priorities and monitor and assess executive performance.

Emmett Williams serves as ABC Fitness’ Managing Director of the Asia-Pacific region, leading a regional team of customers and employees. Emmett is a global leader in the fitness industry with more than two decades of experience,  having built and led organizations across multiple continents, with deep expertise in both technology and advocacy.

Prior to joining ABC Fitness, Emmett was a founding partner of Myzone, a pioneering wearable technology company. After relocating from Australia to the United States in 2011, he helped grow the business from a start-up into a global brand with more than 9,000 gym customers and over 3 million users. Under his leadership, Myzone earned numerous industry accolades, including IHRSA/HFA’s “Supplier of the Year” award. Emmett was also inducted into AUSactive’s prestigious Roll of Honour for excellence in leadership. His fitness industry experience began at the club level, with hands-on experience in sales and operations.

A passionate industry advocate, Emmett currently serves as Chair of the Board for AUSactive, Australia’s peak fitness industry body, where in recent years he spearheaded the nationally recognised “Fit for Office” campaign to drive government engagement. He is also an advisory board member of the Industry Partner Council for the Health & Fitness Association (HFA) and a council member of the Global Health and Fitness Alliance (GHFA), where he has overseen more than $300K in global research initiatives aimed at influencing intergovernmental & governmental policy.

Emmett holds GAICD post-nominals, having earned accreditation as a company director through the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Outside of work, Emmett is an active family man with a love for the outdoors. He and his wife have two teenagers, and their weekends are often filled with trail running, mountain biking, martial arts, snowboarding, and wakeboarding.

She is best known for teaming up with well-known industry entrepreneurs including Mike Balfour OBE - Founder of Fitness First, Sir Richard Branson owner of Virgin Active South Africa and Brendon Levenson founder of Jetts Fitness. Having previously won the Deloitte Best Company to work in South Africa, Elaine is passionate about building successful companies through great cultures and growing exceptional Leaders. She is the 2017 winner of the Sunshine Coast Business Women's network 'Outstanding Business Woman of the Year' and guest author for the Institute of Managers and Leaders bestselling book, Leadership Matters. Elaine recently performed a Management Buy Out of Jetts Australia taking back the ownership of the brand from The Fitness and Lifestyle Group.

Prior to his current APAC CEO role at BFT, David was for 8 years, a key Senior Executive with Fitness and Lifestyle Group (FLG). David has been involved at Board level since age 25, sitting as a Board member of Fitness Victoria. He has also been involved with local sporting communities and School Boards for the past 10 years. In 2009 - 2012, David was heavily involved with Fitness Australia, both with financial backing from his chain of gyms, Fenix, as well as personal involvement, fighting against the proposed unfair music copyright licensing fees and the Phonographic Performance Company of Australia (PPCA) with great success.

Jen has over 13 years’ experience within the Fitness Industry in a range of roles from Personal Trainer, Outdoor Group Fitness business owner, mentor, educator and presenter.

Jen’s personal mission is to raise the standard of the fitness industry through education and collaboration and has been executing this for many years within the pre and postnatal space. Positioning herself as a specialist both in working with women and training the trainers that work with women, she is a huge advocate of strengthening relationships between the fitness industry, allied health and medical industry.

Jen shares her knowledge and experience by regularly presenting at key industry conferences including FILEX in Australia, ExPro in Singapore and later FITEx in New Zealand. She also writes regularly for What’s New in Fitness and Women’s Health Australia.

John brings and allied health and research perspective to AUSactive. He is an allied health professional, health researcher and board director. John completed a back pain focused PhD at The University of Sydney in 2021 involving the design and leading an Australia-wide randomised controlled trial investigating the effects of combined physical and psychological interventions for the management of chronic back pain. John is a practicing chiropractor scince 1998 at Body Mind Central, an allied health practice in Sydney Australia and continues to practice alongside his research roles.

His experience in board directorships within other organisations include chairperson of the board of director of Central and Eastern Sydney Allied Health Network (CESAHN) continuously since 2020. CESAHN is an organisation supporting primary allied health practices and clinicians to improve health outcomes of people living in the region.

Other organisations that John currently (or previously) works for include NSW Health Agency for Clinical Innovation (ACI) – Pain Management Network, and ACI -State Spinal Cord Injury Network, The University of Sydney - Kolling Institute and Macquarie University Health Sciences.

John’s perspectives and experiences will be an additional support to the already strong and diverse AUSactive board of directors.

Dr. Betul Sekendiz obtained her PhD in Sport Management from Bond University on the Gold Coast, specialising in risk management and minimisation of legal liability issues in the health and fitness industry. Her doctoral research was a catalyst for a nationwide research project (Australian Fitness Industry Risk Management [AFIRM] Project) funded by the Australian Research Council and industry partners Fitness Australia and Sports Medicine Australia that has informed industry policy and practices. Simon Bishop is the Head of Integrity at Basketball Australia. Simon joined Basketball Australia in 2016 and worked closely with the National Integrity of Sport Unit and Sport Australia to develop Basketball Australia’s National Integrity Framework. Dr. Dan Jolley is an Accredited AusREP and lectures in Certificate III and IV in Fitness at South Metropolitan TAFE, in Perth. He has been studying and working in the fitness and sports industries since 1997. He has a bachelor’s degree in exercise science, and a master’s in exercise physiology. His doctorate in education psychology examined the knowledge, and critical thinking skills, of Australian fitness students and professionals. Dan previously worked as a strength and conditioning coach for several successful teams, including the Perth Scorchers (WBBL), and in the Western Australian Football League competition. Her experience in the fields of health promotion, physical activity, fitness industry, and project management spans across government, not-for-profit sectors, and private enterprise. Since 1990, she has worked with Newcastle University research teams, Health Service Project implementation and evaluation, Heart Foundation Special Projects and Activity Living teams.  Simultaneously maintaining a sole trader business, working casually for local gyms/clubs.  She was the lead in opening a new fitness facility, managing it for 2 years, returning to a position with the Heart Foundation.

Deborah personal and professional values align with finding the optimal strategies for people to live their best lives. Deborah was part of the development of Heartmoves, an award-winning national program of integrating the fitness and health sectors. Recently, she has worked to create a collaboration between the Hunter Ageing Alliance and Novacare Community Services to develop the Active Stronger Better Model to replicate Heartmoves' achievements, but in a digital age and with greater advocacy to sustain the success.

Rhys has a strong vision to share knowledge across the industry in a multidisciplinary manner. He aims to apply his knowledge practically to empower others to learn in an environment specific to them. Throughout and beyond his post-graduate studies, he has encountered a variety of situations to share his learnings. These range from professional soccer to public health and wellness within leisure facilities. The latest experience involved supporting the Olympic Games 2024 as a Technogym Ambassador and Trainer. 

Currently, Rhys represents the world leading Wellness solution provider Technogym as Wellness Institute & Community Manager within Australia. Previously, he was fortunate enough to work at the Headquarters of the company in Cesena, Italy and was able to experience first-hand all of the fantastic research and development embedded into each new concept and follow it through to the launch and activation stages of a product's journey. Today, his aim is to expand the Technogym Network in Australia through the means of education.

Her extensive experience includes guiding teams across various sectors, such as commercial health clubs, council-operated facilities, and YMCA-managed contracts and facilities. She has played a pivotal role in shaping the development of both current and emerging leaders within the YMCA and the broader fitness and recreation field.

Nadine's leadership extends beyond the confines of her immediate teams, as she actively shares her wealth of knowledge, experiences, and successes with the wider industry. She has been a featured speaker at numerous aquatics, recreation, and fitness business events, offering insights and expertise garnered from her years of hands-on experience.

In her current role as General Manager of Recreation, Nadine oversees all YMCA-managed facilities across Victoria, as well as the South Australia Aquatic and Leisure Centre. This role not only underscores her depth of experience but also highlights her ability to effectively manage and drive success across a diverse range of recreational facilities
