Mental Health Support in Leisure: Practical Tools for a Resilient Workforce and Inclusive Participation

September 10, 2025 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

This session will explore how exercise professionals can confidently support mental health in the leisure environment—both for themselves and the communities they serve. We’ll unpack a suite of practical, evidence-based resources developed by Belgravia Foundation and trialed through Belgravia Leisure to build a more mentally healthy and inclusive sector.

Topics will include:

MHeLP (Mental Health eLearning Program): An online training course designed specifically for the leisure workforce, MHeLP increases understanding of mental health conditions, helps staff recognise warning signs, and offers practical guidance on how to respond appropriately and empathetically.

Workforce Mental Health Posters: A set of visual tools for staff to support recognition of facial expressions and behaviours linked to poor mental health. Posters also provide clear, step-by-step actions to take when facing a mental health crisis or moderate incident, helping staff respond with confidence and care.

Take Charge! Program: A structured program supporting people living with mental health challenges to participate in physical activity. Delivered in leisure settings, this program promotes social connection, self-efficacy, and physical wellbeing.

Creating Pathways to Participation: We'll explore how these tools help remove barriers to participation, foster psychological safety, and ensure underrepresented groups feel welcome, supported, and included in our programs and facilities.

Whether you're a group fitness instructor, yoga or Pilates teacher, personal trainer, or in a leadership role, this session will equip all health and fitness professionals with practical tools and knowledge to promote mental wellbeing and inclusion within your facility.
