Get to know Benny Russell, Exercise Professional and Club Manager member at Vision Personal Training, as he shares his journey in the fitness industry and what being part of the AUSactive community means to him. From his initial studies to becoming a club manager and now about to open his own gym, Vision Personal Training Eastlakes, his story is one of inspiration.

Can you tell us who you are and about your journey with Vision Personal Training?

My name's Benny and I’ve been at Vision Rose Bay for the last seven years. Now, I'm very excited to be opening a brand new venue at Vision East Lakes.

What is your current role?
I’m the Studio Manager at Rose Bay and about to become the Director at East Lakes. I’m also a Level 3 Exercise Professional with AUS Active.

What benefits have you experienced through AUS Active?
As a personal trainer, I’ve benefited from the ongoing CEC points and the support and network they offer.

Now as a club manager, I have access to amazing resources that help me run my own studio — including recruitment, legal support, and many other tools that have been incredible.

What advice would you give someone entering the fitness industry?
It won’t always be easy. You might hear that you’ll work your own hours and earn the money you want, but most of the successful people have been doing this for 5, 10, even 15 years. You need to find the right support network and a good mentor. Be prepared for some tough days – but it’s one of the most rewarding careers you could have.

Where do you see yourself in five years?
I see myself leveraging my time to help more people as a personal trainer. There are only so many hours in the day, but through Vision’s career path, I now have the ability to help hundreds of people by training the next generation of fitness professionals.

What’s your favourite part of the job?
Meeting everyday Australians. It’s not just about training athletes – it’s about helping people who really need it.

I get to witness truly inspirational stories from people overcoming yo-yo dieting, injuries, and mental health challenges to become the best versions of themselves.

Why did you first join the fitness industry?
I was looking for direction in my life. I had spent ten years in hospitality and also trained as an actor.

A few friends I trained with told me I was good at it and encouraged me to give it a go. So I went to TAFE, studied my Certificate III and IV, and found my way through AUSactive and Vision into the inspirational career I have now.
