AUSactive Registered Tai Chi Professionals must complete foundation course requirements that have been assessed against industry-endorsed knowledge, skills and practical requirement criteria. AUSactive welcomes education providers to submit their education which covers the foundation requirements.

Pathway 1 – Requirements for individuals with no fitness/Pilates qualifications
Pathway 2 – Requirements for individuals with nationally endorsed qualifications in group exercise instruction (equal to or, equivalent to Group Exercise Instructor registration category).

Foundation requirements
The foundation requirements of a Tai Chi Instructor must identify that the graduate has the competency to deliver safe and effective Tai Chi services outlined in the Scope of Practice. The following requirements of the Tai Chi Professional include, but are not limited to:
- Use pre-exercise screening
- Develop class plans that include a warm up, core components and a cool down
- Use effective non-verbal and verbal cueing
- Use participant and mirror image effectively
- Identify and appropriately communicate necessary changes to poor technique
- Use different motivational techniques to encourage each participant
- Establish a rapport with the group and use positive body language
- Provide an inclusive environment
- Understand the learning process by breaking down movements into teachable parts
- Encourage questions and group discussions
- Ensure participants are working within their comfort level
- Follow workplace health and safety guidelines, including venue suitability, ventilation and social distancing
- Apply first aid and the process for reporting an incident
- Demonstrate principles of movement including coordination with the breath
- Be able to incorporate meditative aspects of Tai Chi when appropriate
- Demonstrate stances and practical variations: bow or forward stance, horse stance, empty stance, kicks and balances
- Demonstrate your chosen Tai Chi form with correct technique
- Demonstrate processes of teaching your chosen Tai Chi form using logical teaching methods
- Identify participants’ incorrect techniques and use appropriate methods to improve posture, stance and movements
- Understand the definition of Tai Chi
- Understand the benefits of Tai Chi
- Have an awareness of scientific research into Tai Chi
- Understand the principles of movement and flow
- Have a knowledge of history and styles of Tai Chi
- Have an awareness of the philosophy behind Tai Chi and essential principles inclusive of mind, body i.e., posture, and movements for your choice of Tai Chi
- Have an awareness of principles of Yin and Yang
