Barrie Elvish, CEO of AUSactive since January 2019, has announced his retirement.
During his tenure, Barrie led AUSactive through major challenges. These included declining revenue, disengaged members and Board-related issues.
As a result, the organisation is now a stronger and more forward-focused industry leader.

Barrie joined as Interim CEO. He quickly set a clear strategic direction.

Under his leadership, AUSactive achieved:
- Constitutional reforms to improve Board representation
- A successful rebrand from Fitness Australia to AUSactive
- Stronger industry positioning
Driving Advocacy and Industry Influence
Barrie strengthened AUSactive’s national presence.
He built relationships with:
- Federal and state governments
- Health insurers
- The healthcare sector
As a result, AUSactive achieved key outcomes:
- Secured NDIS provider status
- Supported policy changes for exercise professionals
- Strengthened the role of fitness in preventative health
A Leadership Style Defined by Integrity
Barrie is known for his clear and decisive leadership.
He explained complex issues in a simple way. In addition, he led with integrity.
Because of this, he built trust across staff, Board members and industry stakeholders.
Leaving a Lasting Legacy
AUSactive Deputy Chair Jayne Blake reflected on his impact.
