AUSactive and Les Mills streamline Group Exercise Leader pathway to accelerate safe entry into the workforce

AUSactive has introduced a new pathway to become a Group Exercise Leader (GEL), making it faster and more accessible for new instructors to enter the industry.

The initiative includes a free 6-week student membership, a WHS micro-credential worth 2 CPD points, and recognition of Les Mills Initial Training. As a result, it reduces both the time and cost required to get started.

A Faster Pathway to Becoming a Group Exercise Leader

AUSactive, Australia’s peak body for exercise and active health, has simplified the registration process for Group Exercise Leaders.

Importantly, the new pathway recognises Les Mills Initial Training and similar pre-choreographed certifications. At the same time, it maintains essential safety requirements to ensure high standards across the industry.

This means trainees can begin teaching sooner, while still meeting professional and safety expectations.

What the New GEL Pathway Includes

Under the new pathway, Les Mills trainees can activate a free 6-week AUSactive Student Membership.

This membership provides:

  • Student insurance for supervised practical sessions
  • Free access to the WHS Fundamentals micro-credential
  • 2 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points

In addition, trainees who hold current First Aid and CPR, along with appropriate insurance, can apply to become AUSactive Registered GELs.

Once registered, they are qualified to lead pre-designed group exercise sessions in predictable environments.

Limited-Time Membership Offer

For a limited time, AUSactive is offering a discounted upgrade to full professional membership.

  • $99 for the first year
  • $180 for two years

This offer provides an affordable pathway for new instructors to transition into the industry.

Supporting Safer and Stronger Entry into the Industry

Billie Cox, General Manager of Business Development at AUSactive, said the new pathway removes barriers while maintaining high standards.

“This new GEL pathway is about removing unnecessary barriers, while keeping safety and quality front and centre,” Ms Cox said.

“By recognising the training provided by Les Mills and combining it with WHS, First Aid and CPR requirements, we are helping new instructors enter the industry faster and with confidence.”

Industry Collaboration Strengthening the Sector

Hylton Drake, Chief Operating Officer at Les Mills Asia Pacific, welcomed the initiative.

“We’re delighted to partner with AUSactive on this streamlined pathway,” Mr Drake said.

“This approach ensures that aspiring instructors can step into the studio sooner, with the knowledge, insurance and safety frameworks they need to succeed.”

Positive Impact for Clubs and Communities

Kristen Green, General Manager at Aquafit, said the pathway will benefit both instructors and fitness facilities.

“We see the passion and professionalism of new instructors every week,” Ms Green said.

“This initiative makes it easier for them to join the industry, while still meeting high safety and training standards. It’s a fantastic outcome for clubs, instructors and members.”
