AUSactive Welcomes Natural Therapies Review Recommendations
AUSactive has welcomed the latest recommendations from the Federal Government’s Natural Therapies Review.
The review supports the re-inclusion of Pilates, Yoga and Tai Chi for private health insurance rebates.
Background to the Natural Therapies Review
Since 1 April 2019, 16 natural therapies have been excluded from the Private Health Insurance Rebate.
This followed a 2015 review, which found limited clinical evidence to support their inclusion.
However, the Natural Therapies Review Expert Advisory Panel, led by Michael Kidd, has reassessed the evidence.
As a result, the panel has recommended reinstating Pilates, Yoga and Tai Chi, along with several other therapies.
A Positive Outcome for the Industry
AUSactive CEO Barrie Elvish said the outcome is a major step forward.
“This is a strong result for both our members and the wider community,” Mr Elvish said.
“These evidence-based practices support health, wellbeing and long-term quality of life.”
AUSactive’s Role in the Review
AUSactive contributed as a key stakeholder throughout the review process.
It provided:
- Peer-reviewed research
- Practitioner insights
- Policy recommendations
As a result, the organisation helped demonstrate the value of these modalities.
Supporting Health and Wellbeing
Mr Elvish said the goal was to reverse the 2015 decision.
He emphasised the broader benefits of these therapies.
“These practices support mobility, mental health and overall wellbeing,” he said.
In addition, they play an important role in preventative health.
Next Steps for Government
The review assessed 16 therapies in total.
Seven therapies, including Pilates, Yoga and Tai Chi, are now recommended for re-inclusion.
AUSactive is encouraging Mark Butler to support the recommendations.
“We urge the government to act quickly,” Mr Elvish said.
“These therapies align with national health priorities and improve accessibility for Australians.”
Ongoing Advocacy
AUSactive will continue to advocate for evidence-based natural therapies.
Its focus remains on supporting a more integrated approach to health and wellness.
