WE ARE AUSactive: Showcasing Member Chris Wilson

As part of our #WEAREAUSactive campaign, we continue to celebrate the inspiring stories of AUSactive members shaping the future of the fitness industry.

This week, we are proud to feature Chris Wilson, a dedicated fitness professional whose passion for health, community and personal growth has spanned nearly two decades.

Chris began his journey at just 14 years old as a gym instructor in Milford Haven, Wales. Since then, he has built a career defined by purpose, perseverance and people-first leadership. Over the past 18 years, he has taken on many roles, including personal trainer, group class coordinator and business owner. Throughout this time, his focus has remained the same — helping others move better, live stronger and stay accountable.

In 2017, Chris took a bold step towards his dream by launching his first gym from his home garage. Although the space was small, it represented a big vision. What started as a personal mission has since grown into a thriving multi-studio fitness community built on connection, accountability and care.

Today, Chris leads a team of 18 coaches across multiple studios. In addition, he continues to give back to the community through challenges, sponsorships and donations. As a result, his impact extends far beyond the gym floor.

His story is a powerful reminder that success in the fitness industry is not just about skill. It is also about service, heart and the commitment to lift others along the way.

Meet Chris Wilson

How long have you been a member with AUSactive?

I’m currently in my first year as a member. Mike introduced me to the great work AUSactive is doing, which encouraged me to get involved.

What motivated you to pursue a career in the exercise and active health industry?

I’ve always wanted to help others. Growing up, I played sport at a competitive level, which inspired me to pursue a career in health and fitness.

I’ve always found the human body fascinating. In addition, I was passionate about helping people improve their technique and stay accountable. I started working at my local gym in Milford Haven at 14. Later, I became a Personal Trainer at 18 while studying Sport and Physical Education at university in Cardiff. I’ve now been a PT for 18 years.

What qualifications do you hold?

  • Level 3 & 4
  • BSc Sport & Physical Education
  • ZUU Level 2
  • TRX Level 1
  • Burgener Weightlifting Level 1
  • UKSCA/ASCA Level 1
  • Plus many additional certifications

What has your journey as an exercise professional looked like so far?

I started as a gym instructor before moving into personal training and group fitness. From there, I became a Group Class Coordinator.

After moving to Australia, I progressed into a Head Personal Trainer role. I then became self-employed before stepping into business ownership. Today, I am a Director, and we are about to open our fourth fitness studio and sixth location within four years.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?

Professionally, I am proud of contributing to the fitness industry and showing that it is possible to build a long-term career in this space.

I’m also proud to provide jobs for others. We now have 18 coaches, and building that team has been incredibly rewarding. In addition, giving back to the community through challenges, sponsorships and donations is something I value deeply.

Personally, I’ve completed a marathon, climbed 15 mountains above 3000 metres in 24 hours, and helped clients achieve life-changing transformations, including losing over 30kg.

What has been your biggest challenge?

One of the biggest challenges has been managing growth. As the business expands, it becomes more important to maintain a high standard of service while implementing the right systems to support the team.

On a personal level, it’s also important to avoid overworking. Taking time for yourself is essential, especially when you are leading by example.

What advice would you give someone entering the industry?

Find your niche and understand your target audience. More importantly, focus on how you can genuinely help people.

Always put people first.

What is your favourite part of your job?

Working with a diverse range of clients. Their stories are inspiring, and the relationships you build are incredibly meaningful.

At the same time, it’s important to remain professional and maintain clear boundaries.

What has been your highlight of being an AUSactive member?

It’s been great to see the work AUSactive is doing through campaigns and events.

Having Mike attend the opening of our new studio was a real highlight. It showed genuine support for independent studios and a commitment to the community.
