Meet Kwinana Recquatic Centre
What makes your business stand out in the fitness industry?
Kwinana Recquatic is an award-winning facility recognised for its vibrant team culture, exceptional customer experience, and positive community impact. Our mission, Inspiring a physically and mentally healthy Kwinana, drives everything we do. We take pride in initiatives like our award-winning partnership with Good Sammy, establishing a Social Enterprise Café that provides employment for people with disabilities. At Recquatic, we maintain a strong focus on each individual within our team, consistently fostering a supportive work environment. This commitment has positioned us as an industry leader, earning accolades such as AUSactive’s 2023 National Employer of Choice and LIWA’s 2024 Swim School of the Year, as well as recognition for our outstanding performance in AUSactive’s 2024 Mentally Healthy Workplaces Program.
How do you stay ahead of trends and adapt to changes in the fitness industry?
We aim to review each activity we offer to ensure we’re delivering the best solutions to meet our community’s needs. This proactive approach includes transforming our Stretch Studio into a Virtual Studio equipped with the Pliability app, enhancing flexibility and recovery options for members. We’ve also upgraded our Spin Studio to a virtual experience with Les Mills Virtual classes and Body Bikes, offering high-quality, interactive cycling sessions. Our recent implementation of Perfect Gym software ensures a seamless member experience while creating back-of-house efficiencies. Additionally, our Specialised Access and Inclusion Swimming Lessons (SAIL), which won a National Swim School Award in 2022, and our Social Enterprise Café—the first of its kind in Australian leisure centres—underscore our commitment to accessibility, inclusivity, and innovation. Lastly, by attending industry events and conferences and maintaining strong connections with peers in our industry, we stay connected and bring the latest advancements to our team and community.
What are your members’ favourite aspects of your business and the services you provide?
Overall, it’s hard to pinpoint just one thing. Of course, our members love having everything under one roof—from sports courts, swimming pools, and gym facilities to group classes, a café, and a crèche. But the feedback we most often hear is about the unique atmosphere when you walk in. Members frequently mention how obvious it is that our staff genuinely enjoy being at work and care about patrons, creating a warm, welcoming environment where people feel supported and valued. This authentic, community-focused approach makes Kwinana Recquatic a special place for everyone.
How do you prioritise the well-being of both your staff and clients?
For our staff, we prioritise well-being by actively participating in programs like Employer of Choice and the Mentally Healthy Workplaces Program. These provide us with comprehensive, reliable data on how our staff feel at work, helping us continually improve. We also live by the principle, where there’s impact, there’s input—if a change is made, those affected are involved in shaping it. For our clients, our first priority is having an outstanding team, as a great team creates a great environment. We offer safe, accessible facilities and support mental well-being through initiatives like member BBQs, participation in R U OK? Day and Movember, and a strong emphasis on the mental health benefits that come from physical activity. This approach ensures that both staff and clients feel valued, supported, and part of a positive community.
What positive impact has your business had on the local fitness community?
Recquatic has become a community hub, a place where people of all ages and abilities can come together to enjoy fitness and well-being. Through initiatives like our Over 55s Swimming lessons, the Heartbeat Program, and the SAIL initiative, we make fitness fun and accessible, creating positive experiences that strengthen our community. Recent results from our Markyt Community Scorecard show that key health markers—such as general health, diet and nutrition, and levels of exercise and physical activity—are improving across Kwinana. With record-breaking attendance numbers year on year, it’s clear that Recquatic is having a genuine, positive impact on the health and happiness of our community.
What has been a recent highlight or success for your business?
Our recent achievements showcase both our growth and commitment to excellence. We’ve reached record numbers in health and fitness memberships, Swim School enrolments, and overall attendance, a testament to the strong connection we’ve built with our community. Winning National Employer of Choice last year was a proud moment, recognising our efforts in building a positive and supportive workplace culture. Being a finalist for Leisure Centre of the Year was also a significant achievement, highlighting that, while we may not be the largest or flashiest facility, we are valued for our dedication and impact.
This year, at the WA Leisure Industry Awards, we celebrated multiple wins: Swim School of the Year, the Community Impact Award, and the Emerging Leader Award for our own Gordon Cheok. Additionally, we’ve introduced a Virtual Spin Studio and upgraded to Perfect Gym software, further enhancing our member experience and operational efficiency. These accomplishments reflect the hard work and passion of our team in delivering quality services and creating a welcoming, vibrant space for everyone in our community.
What has been the biggest challenge your business has faced, and how did you overcome it?
Since 2019, Recquatic has been on a major transformational journey. It began with an extensive service review and restructure, which brought a fresh approach and a new team dynamic. Shortly after the restructure, COVID-19 hit, and our team had to rally together during this challenging time. Since then, we’ve focused on creating a workplace where staff genuinely enjoy coming to work—not through flashy team-building activities, but through a genuine commitment to building a supportive and positive culture.
It’s been a long road, but we’re now in a fantastic place, evidenced by our recent recognition for standout performance in the Mentally Healthy Workplaces Program. A strong example of our team’s cohesion and commitment was the successful transition to our new Leisure Management Software, Perfect Gym—a huge change process impacting both staff and members. The transition has gone smoothly thanks to our team’s collaborative spirit and focus on making it a positive experience for everyone.

What advice would you give someone considering a career in management within the exercise and active health industry?
Anything you achieve as a manager will be achieved through your team, so focus on supporting the individuals who make up that team. Your success is rooted in their growth, so be intentional about understanding each person’s strengths, goals, and motivations. Help them grow, recognise their strengths, and celebrate their successes. Be grateful for the impact we have on those who visit our centres, this work transforms lives and strengthens our community. Show up with passion and dedication, because we’re making a huge difference in people’s lives, be that your staff or patrons.
