Pilates Therapeutic Treatment Requirements (Private Health Fund Rebates)

Delivering Therapeutic Pilates for private health fund rebates requires a higher level of qualification, experience, and compliance than general classes. Below is a clear guide to what you need to know.

Qualifications & Experience

To be eligible under most health funds (including Medibank and ARHG-aligned funds), you must:

  • Hold a Diploma-level qualification (or higher) in Pilates, including:
    • 11292NAT

  • Hold a current Working with Children Check or Working with Vulnerable People registration.
  • Hold current Professional Indemnity Insurance with a minimum cover of $5 million per claim, plus a minimum of $10 million Public Liability Insurance.

Important

  • The 500 supervised hours are not included in the 3,000 hours.
  • The 3,000 hours must be post-qualification experience.
  • For most professionals, this equates to more than eight years of industry experience.

Pilates

Pilates is a mind-body exercise method that improves efficient movement patterns, postural awareness, coordinated strength, flexibility, and respiratory function. It enhances physical function by supporting strength, alignment, balance, range of motion, breathing efficiency, and overall functional capacity.

Pilates is also used to prevent and manage injuries and chronic conditions by reducing pain, improving mobility, and supporting musculoskeletal health. Its mindful, purposeful movement approach further promotes mental wellbeing.

It can be performed “on the mat”, on specialised Pilates equipment (often utilising springs for resistance and challenge) and can incorporate the use of small props.
