April 2024 Advocacy Update

This April Advocacy update provides essential insights into the media coverage of the Federal Budget Submission.

This month, AUSactive has received exceptional media attention regarding our Federal Budget submission. The focus has been on our proposal to allow Australians to claim an income tax deduction for participating in active health activities such as personal training sessions, gym memberships, pilates, yoga, and tai chi.

Our submission urges the government to take the following actions:

  • Grant employers an exemption from the Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) legislation, enabling them to offer their employees gym memberships without penalties.
  • Permit Australians to deduct active health participation expenses, including gym memberships, from their income tax.
  • Collaborate with us and grassroots organisations to develop and launch a national public health campaign promoting the importance of physical activity for overall well-being.

Our call for active health initiatives has gained significant traction, with coverage across over 200 news outlets and radio stations. This exposure has not only earned AUSactive national recognition but also highlighted the potential cost savings for the government. By focusing on proactive health measures, our industry can potentially save the government billions of dollars in healthcare expenses, a significant advancement for both the exercise industry and the government's budget.

We are encouraged by Federal Health Minister Mark Butler's acknowledgment of our submission in an ABC article. He emphasised the need to empower Australians to lead healthier lives and mentioned ongoing efforts within his department, including implementing the National Preventative Health Strategy. Minister Butler assured us that AUSactive's submission would be considered part of the federal budget review process.

As the Federal Budget is due for release in May, we are optimistic that our proposals will receive favourable consideration and that funding could be allocated for our proposals. In any case, we will continue to advocate strongly for the government on behalf of our industry.

Our Budget Proposal has been mentioned in the media outlets below, and you can view many of these on our website as well as sign our petition urging the Federal Government to allow Australians to claim an income tax deduction for participating in active health activities such as personal training sessions, gym memberships, pilates, yoga, and tai chi.
