What is overthinking? 💭

Overthinking is when we keep going over and over the same information in your mind time and time again. It might be related to a difficult conversation we had at work, a decision we made to buy an item or even whether you did the right thing by turning down a coffee date with someone that asked you out. At the time you might not have felt confident in your choice or you might have been certain it was the right thing for you…but then the doubt creeps in and next thing you know you are spending most of your down time rethinking the situation and going through all the possible alternative outcomes.

Overthinking is exhausting. It saps your mental energy, clogs your mind up with negative feelings and thoughts and can stand in the way of making even simple decisions. If you have a history of anxiety and/or depression, overthinking is also a contributing factor to worsening symptoms.

So, what can you do to reduce the effects of overthinking?

1. Get some support from friends and loved ones -ask them to tell you when they notice you are overthinking something so you can take steps to change that

2. Keep a journal of those thoughts that keep coming back to you time and time again. Take some time each week to investigate those thoughts and ask yourself whether it’s time to let those thoughts go.

3. Recognise that we cannot time travel. Remind yourself that anything that has happened to us is now in the past. We cannot go back and have those conversations again or change the choices we have made. The only thing we can do is learn from our experiences.

4. Stay active – each time you find yourself going into an overthinking pattern get up and engage in a physical activity to reduce the tension. Take the dog for a walk or do some stretches.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is practice self-compassion. You might not be able to eliminate all of that overthinking quickly but if you can reduce it, that’s something you should feel really good about accomplishing.

Tax Time Fitness Resources 💰

With tax time getting closer by the day, The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has some top tips for navigating tax time. While you can’t claim your new protein powder or gym tights, you may be able to claim some equipment or the cost of cleaning specific work uniforms. Check out the tax time guide for the fitness and sport industry to work out what you can and can’t claim this tax time.

COVID-19 threw a curve ball on the fitness industry and as a result, your income and deductions might be a little different this year.

If you received a COVID-19 support payment, the tax treatment varies so make sure you visit the ATO’s quick guide to find out which COVID-19 support payments you need to include in your tax return.

And don’t forget that COVID-19 tests you purchase for work purposes are now tax-deductible. You can claim a deduction for COVID-19 tests you paid for from 1 July 2021 as long as you:
👉 Used the test for a work-related purpose
👉 Had a qualifying COVID-19 test, such as a PCR test or a rapid antigen test
👉 Have a record of your purchase
👉 Paid for the test yourself and were not reimbursed for the cost by your employer.

Tax doesn’t need to be as exhausting as leg day. If you need some help completing and lodging your tax return and your income is around $60,000 or less, you may be eligible for the ATO’s free Tax Help program. Support can be provided online, by phone, or in person.

For more info, see ato.gov.au/fitnessPR.

What is habit stacking? 💭

When people think ‘habits’ they often think of all the bad things they do that they really want to stop. One thing to remember is that not all habits are bad. Our schedules and lifestyles are full of good habits too and often the good habits outweigh the bad.

One thing we know is that if you want to implement a new habit the best and easiest way to go about this is to attach it to another habit we already engage in on a regular basis. We call this ‘Habit Stacking’.

Think of your favourite good habit- it might be making yourself a freshly brewed cup of coffee every morning or getting up and heading out to do your own workout before starting work for the day. If you have a new habit you want to put in place, stacking it on top of the existing good habit goes a long way to making the new habit become a permanent part of your lifestyle. One example might be adding an extra 5 minutes of stretches or warm up to your day. By doing that while your coffee is brewing or right before that morning workout you attach the two activities to each other. That attachment binds the new habit to the already solid habit increasing the success of the new habit immensely.

Don’t forget you can also remove the less desirable habits by stacking a different habit around them. For example, if you are trying to stop biting your nails and you find you do it whilst out walking you might choose to make it a habit to start wearing gloves on cold mornings when heading out for your walk. Your hands will be toasty warm, and your nails will be much harder to access. This type of habit stacking can help to break those behaviour cycles and create more helpful ones.

Ask yourself today – are there new habits I can stack on to my existing ones? Engage family, friends and colleagues and support each other to habit stack yourself to a better sense of wellbeing. 🧘
