February 2024 Advocacy Update

Written by AUSactive's dedicated Policy & Advocacy Officer, Mariana Ivantsoff.

Disability grant submission and upcoming grant submission for Women’s Health

AUSactive is continuing its work to make physical activity accessible across the nation and to improve the health of Australians.

To that purpose, we recently made an application to the ILC Individual Capacity Building Grant Application for 2024–25,  because nearly three quarters of people with disability currently do not engage in sufficient physical activity due to barriers such as inaccessible facilities, a shortage of trained exercise professionals, and reported discrimination. If successful in our application, we will undertake a project that seeks to remedy this by establishing a Program Advisory Committee, codesigning tailored exercise programs, developing program modules and delivering inclusive training for exercise professionals across Australia to improve the health of people with a disability.

We are also submitting a grant application for the Federal Department of Health and Aged Care “Improving Health Outcomes for Priority Populations of Women and Girls” grant. This grant aims to improve health outcomes for women at greatest risk of poor health by implementing strategies outlined in the National Women's Health Strategy 2020-2030 on a national level.

If successful, we aim to create a national women's health program that will specifically target the issues related to perimenopause and menopause faced by women in low socioeconomic areas across Australia, particularly in regional and remote regions

ACCC Roundtable re Sustainability

I recently attended the ACCC Roundtable on Sustainability where there was discussion around the Australian government’s upcoming requirement for large corporations to report on climate change and its implications on their operations.

We anticipate that larger franchises in our industry will not be affected by these requirements until at least 2027, however we are currently investigating how you may be impacted and will be preparing education and resources on how you may be obligated to report on sustainability initiatives in the future.

South Australian Skills Commission’s (Commission) Early Educators, Health, Human Services, Sport and Recreation Industry Skills Council

AUSactive has been invited to nominate a representative from our organisation to be appointed as a member of the South Australian Skills Commission’s (Commission) Early Educators, Health, Human Services, Sport and Recreation Industry Skills Council.

The Commission’s role is to regulate South Australia’s apprenticeship and traineeship system. If successful, AUSactive will be able to provide the South Australian government with advice on vocational education and training, workforce development priorities, promotion of career pathways and lifelong learning for our industry.
